From a young age, my parents instilled in my sister and me the idea that boredom is simply a lack of imagination. I also struggle with a persistent fear of being “unproductive” or wasting the day. This combination can cause a lot of anxiety and restlessness if I let those thoughts spiral.
I have to remind myself constantly that productivity isn’t the only measure of my day; there are softer, more creative ways to spend my time that bring me a lot of joy. I have to remind myself that creative expression is just as vital as doing the dishes or making my bed.
To avoid the “productivity panic,” I have curated a list of cozy, creative activities to combat my boredom. All of these hobbies are simple, relaxing, and perfect for a slow day at home.
What Makes a Hobby Feel Cozy?
For me, a cozy hobby causes little to no anxiety. It is low-stress, doesn’t have any kind of measure of success, and doesn’t require perfection. I want to feel relaxed and inspired rather than overwhelmed. I’m also a homebody, so I wanted a list of activities you can do at home, either by yourself or with others.

7 Cozy Hobbies to Start Today
Journaling
Journaling (of any kind) is one of my favorite activities. There are many types of journaling, from daily reflection pages (think diary entries) to brain dumps to prompt-based journaling. There is absolutely no wrong way to journal as long as you are creating, reflecting, and having a good time. It’s the ultimate cozy activity because it’s quiet and personal, and it doesn’t require many supplies. I love this one for my daily journaling pages.
Collaging or Junk Journaling
Collaging or Junk Journaling is another activity that gives all the aesthetic vibes and requires basically no artistic ability. You can use anything you find around the house to get started. Old magazines are the most obvious choice, but I’ve also collaged with everything from gum wrappers to the inside of a security envelope. I love this blank journal. It’s such a great cozy activity for me because there really are no rules. The only limit is your imagination!
Reading for Pleasure
Stop tracking how many pages, chapters, or books you’ve read! I know it can be fun to open that Goodreads app and post on socials about how many books you’ve read, but I would encourage you to read for pleasure, not productivity. There can be a lot of pressure to read a certain number of books, especially when you see that one of your friends read 127 books last year, while you’ve only read 10. Remember, reading is supposed to be fun, not a competition.
Creating a Personal Curriculum
Take some time to create a personal curriculum centered on any of your special interests. As a former teacher, I love learning random tidbits of information or new skills, so developing a personal curriculum helps me focus on my special interests in a structured way. Read an article, watch a YouTube video, or create a slideshow and make your partner listen to you.

Playing a Cozy Video Game
I never thought I would say this, but I’ve turned into quite the gamer girly since I’ve discovered all of the cozy games out there. I used to think that most games involved some kind of violence or racing, but then Animal Crossing changed my life. There are so many gaming options for all types of interests and skill levels.

Painting or Watercolor
This sounds a little daunting, especially if you are like me and have no real artistic skills. However, I started to feel differently when I tried watercolor again as an adult. I especially like these watercolor book kits. I personally love watercolor because it doesn’t have to be perfect, and it’s much easier to fix any “mistakes” you might make. Sometimes, the imperfect messiness adds to the charm.
Refreshing a Small Space
Find one corner of your home that you feel could use a little pizzazz and create a moment. It can be the area under the stairs or the corner of your bedroom. The idea is to take a forgotten part of your home and make it beautiful.
You don’t necessarily even have to buy anything to do this; sometimes all you need is to rearrange some furniture or pull an old painting out of your storage closet. Being intentional with these small, often-overlooked spaces in your home can really elevate a room’s vibe.
How to Start Without Feeling Overwhelmed
Here are some basic things to keep in mind as you begin:
- Choose ONE hobby to begin. I know it can be tempting to dabble in a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but try to focus on one hobby to begin with. You don’t want to feel overwhelmed and talk yourself out of starting.
- Don’t buy everything at once. I’m so guilty of buying every little thing that I can for whatever new hobby I’m starting. But, not only can it be expensive, it can make you feel like you have to stick with that hobby, even if you aren’t enjoying it, because you have already made the investment. Start with the basic materials, and if you decide you want to get serious about it, then go to your local craft store and go crazy.
- Set a cozy environment. I’m always affected by my environment, especially the lighting. I like to make sure I start in a clean, organized space. Turn off those overhead lights and light some candles. Get that playlist going. Nothing will make me stop a craft more quickly than being overstimulated by my environment.
Remember, boredom isn’t necessarily bad if you look at it as an invitation to try something new. Trying one small creative hobby can really elevate the coziness of your life. And, as always, it’s about the process, not about perfection. You don’t need to be good at something for it to bring you joy!
